Everybody was busy over the term break with PD. For many, this time was about brushing up on first aid skills.

Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour Head Teacher, Rebecca Thomas, was part of a course on offer over the break, and says as well as a refresher, it offered a great opportunity for connection with other kaiako.

“It was a chance to refresh, and practise important first aid skills that, as kaiako, we hope we never have to use, but still have the confidence that we can if we need to.”

A number of different kindergartens got to spend some time together and strengthen collegial relationships.

“I really value the chance to feel part of a collective, engaging with a wider network of teachers. Professional development is a great opportunity to stay engaged and excited about our mahi. It’s also one of our professional commitments to providing quality education and care for our tamariki.”

Courses like this provide great opportunities to take the learning back to kindergarten.

“They highlight our kindergarten value of ako really well – it’s so important that our tamariki see examples of how we are learners, too.”

Rebecca says much of the information was generic, but easy to tailor to a kindergarten’s individual situation.

“I took away lessons about trusting your knowledge, and about seeking help quickly if needed. That’s especially important for a little community like ours.”
