At Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour, it's a case of making the most of every single enrolment and keeping an ear to the ground for new arrivals to the area.

The local population is small, and people do tend to come and go, says Head Teacher, Bec Thomas. Fourteen Diamond Harbour tamariki just moved onto school, and the next wave of entrants is delayed because they are presently in isolation, but even the usual ebb and flow of things makes marketing a year round activity.

"We make sure there are always pamphlets around key places, and prior to Covid, we were very active at school fairs, book days and those kinds of things - we try to get involved in as many community events as we can. We're also on the school site and that connection is important to us. We have close relationships with doctors' surgeries and Plunket. We also try to put our faces and names out there as much as possible."

The latest initiative for the team is a monthly column in The Diamond Harbour Herald, which they are putting together with the help of a parent who is a former writer for the publication.

"She was really happy to take part," says Becs, "and is also happy to contribute the parent voice."

As well as promoting the benefits of Kidsfirst, the team is pushing the unique features of the kindergarten and their ongoing community and environmental engagement.
