Right after April’s Professional Learning Hui, Kidsfirst’s head teachers gathered for the Head Teacher Hui. It was a day for collaborative thinking, as well as professional development.

Tania Batley, Head Teacher at Kidsfirst Isleworth, was one of the organisers of the Hui.

“It was a great day to come together, be connected, be collegial, and have our awhi before we go back to our work.”

Co-organiser, Kidsfirst Cashmere Head Teacher, Kylie Burrell, says the involvement of all kindergartens this year made a real difference.

“The first Head Teacher Hui was held last year, but we didn’t have the privilege of having our Central Otago and West Coast teams with us. So that’s been really important this time.”

“We tried to listen to our head teachers, and hear what they were wanting support with, and then we’ve tried to implement that, in a way that they can be inspired.” says Kylie.

Rebecca Thomas, from Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour, says that sense of inclusiveness and connectivity makes the event special.

“There’s so much value in those collegial relationships that we’re forming – celebrating each other’s connectedness, and sometimes our differences as well, has been really great.”

Kidsfirst Sumner Head Teacher, Liz Morrit, says taking time out of everyday kindergarten life was part of the value of the day.

“It gave me space and time to really solidify my thinking and then take it back with great excitement to share with my team.”
